There was unusual variety in the 13 bikes gathered in Tesco's car park at Winnall - a Buell Ulysses having never been spotted before and R1200GS and FJR1300s tying for the most represented model. Our leader for the day, Baldrick, explained the marker system and the planned route for the day. The route was as follows -
Depart Tesco's car park and head out through Winchester onto the A3090 heading to Romsey. Turn right onto the A27 and follow this up onto the A36 to Salisbury. A quick wiggle round the roundabouts and then head off on the A36 to Wilton, where we will turn right onto a rather pleasant B3089 through some lovely old villages. Arriving at the A350, we will pop down the road to our usual waypoint of Shaftesbury, where depending on weather, time and general opinion we may throw in a quick stop for coffee coffee in the petrol station "cafe". Heading out of Shaftesbury on the A30 back towards Salisbury for a short distance, before turning right onto the B3081 for another "fix" of the now famous Zig Zag Hill ( Panos failing to raise sparks on the corners due to the wet weather!) we will continue along B3081 through the beautiful Tollard Royal and cross the A354 heading towards Wimborne Minster through some stunning scenery. From Wimbourne we'll nip along the A31 to the A350 again and drop down onto the A35 which we will follow along until we turn off to Wareham on the A351. Passing through Corfe Castle we will then take a small detour and enjoy a rather technical little number (B3351) all the way to Swanage, where we can enjoy a traditional meal of fish and chips. ( A table was booked!)
The route home can be quick or a bit longer if the time and morale allows, but ultimately we will either cut across country on the B3075 back up to Blandford Forum and take the A354 home bound, or alternatively do a bit of "A31" and take a less frequently used route back via Fordingbridge on the A338 to Salisbury. then our usual dash back to Stockbridge where i doubt the tea shop will be open, so we can disperse at will.
Thanks to Paul on the R1200RT for leading and Panos on the HP2 for tailing.
